Our world, and our industry, face pressing environmental, social and economic challenges including climate change, natural resource depletion, a widening income gap, and food insecurity. At the same time, the marketplace socially responsible products and services continues to grow.
The organic sector was founded to provide quality foods in harmony with ecological principles—values that uniquely position us to be leaders in this area. Yet we must continue to build our knowledge and tools, and collaborate, to meet our current global challenges and opportunities successfully.
Realizing this, a diverse group of companies launched the Food Trade Sustainability Leadership Association (FTSLA), a non-profit trade association dedicated to helping the organic food trade adopt leading edge environmentally sound and socially just practices. FTSLA emerged from a multi-year sustainable business incubator program at the University of Oregon's Center for Resource Innovations, and is grounded in solid principles and practical experience in agriculture, organics, science, business, social issues, policy and sustainability frameworks.
FTSLA unites businesses and allied partners across the supply chain to raise the bar in our operations and across our industry. We support reporting and performance improvement with our “Declaration of Sustainability”, a roadmap toward more sustainable practices. Our staff and board bring a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to benefit members and advance our shared mission.
Our membership is comprised of a diverse mix of organic producers, processors, manufacturers, distributors and retailers across North America. We invite you to learn about our work and become a member or partner in advancing sustainability across the food trade.
