Steps to Joining FTSLA

FTSLA has three membership categories—Full Members, Associate Members, and Friends/Affiliates. Full Members are the only category with voting rights for our Board of Directors. Please see Categories & Benefits for details. You may also select a sponsorship level if desired.

Full Members and Associate Members

  1. Sign on to the Declaration of Sustainability and Submit a Membership Application* –Your application will be reviewed by the Membership Review Committee and you will be notified upon acceptance. Upon acceptance, we will add you to the official signatory list and will work with you to help you start measuring, reporting on and improving your company’s sustainability practices.
  2. Payment of Annual Dues
  3. Publicize Your Commitment—We strongly recommend that your company inform employees, customers/consumers and other stakeholders about your signing-on to generate buy-in and excitement. Example media materials and tips are included in the Tool Kit that is available to all Members.
  4. Build Internal Support—Form of sustainability task force to begin to develop a plan to realize the general goals of the Declaration and to monitor sustainability initiatives in your organization. Guidance on Implementation Strategies and Creating Your Sustainability Plan is included in the Tool Kit that is available to all Members.
  5. Submit an Annual Sustainability Report to FTSLA—Each year, members must conduct a self-audit assessing performance against FTSLA metrics and indicators in the 11 areas of FTSLA's Declaration, and submit a sustainability report to FTSLA. Alternatively, if your business already produces an Annual Sustainability or Social Responsibility Report it can serve as the annual self-audit.

The Membership Review Committee will review each self audit; the review will emphasize demonstration of commitment to reporting, transparency and continual improvement. The review committee will recognize that self-audit reports will vary significantly based on size of the organization and resource capacity.
