Hybrid Truck Technology Arrives in Organic Produce

Hybrid electric heavy-duty trucks have begun the reach the commercial market. Two organic produce companies have been early to embrace and test out this new technology. In 2008, Organically Grown Company began making produce deliveries in Portland, OR in a Kenworth T300 hybrid-electric truck. The truck saves 10-30% on fuel and has 30,000 gross vehicle weight capacity. In addition, the new truck runs is 99% biodiesel blend soured primarily from used-cooking oil. More recently, Veritable Vegetable, a San Francisco based organic produce distributor road tested a medium-duty hybrid electric truck and a class C heavy-duty Kenworth T660 aerodynamic long-haul. Both trucks have been certified by the EPA's SMARTWAY emissions reduction program for features such as a "clean idle" diesel particulate filtration system, battery powered bunk heaters, regenerative break drive and aerodynamic design that reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

"With pioneering technology like this we can begin to explore technological possibilities for a foreign-oil free future. And, by having control over our fuel production then we can really begin to focus on how to significantly reduce our greenhouse gas footprint which is very important as a distributor committed to sustainability", says OGC's Transportation Manager Chris Petrick.

How to Set Up a "Green" Trade Show Display

There are approximately 1.2 million meetings in the U.S. every year, and the industry has been coined an "Industry of disposability". How can companies committed to sustainability demonstrate their values in a trade show display? Consider the zero-waste hierarchy when choosing how to set up your trade booth:

First seek to Reduce and Reuse:
- Are there things that you can pare down on? For example: use half sheets of recycled paper for flyers &/or use double-sided printing.
-Are their items you can bring that can be reused again? For example: bring used clamshells to display in at your booth.
-Can you have a system in place system in place to collect and reuse items in your booth?

Then seek to Recycle and/or Compost:
-Can you choose materials that can be easily recycled? Generally recycling available for cardboard, mixed paper, tin, aluminum, plastic (#1, #2 most easily recyclable) and glass bottles. Check with the event producers in advance.
-Can you avoid multi-material items and replace them with single-materials that are easier to recycle? For example: Avoid laminated paper products.
-Can you choose items made with high post consumer recycled content?
-Can you choose items that can be easily composted (biological recycling)? Ask trade show hosts if composting will be available, if so look for ASTM D6400 certification for compost-ability or visit the Biodegradable Packaging Institute .
-Remember to make sure to let people know that your handouts or tasting cups are recyclable or compostable. Encourage proper sorting in bins!
